Post-Election 2010 Seminar

On July 3rd MCS hosted a special Seminar in Glasgow to commend the Muslims who had stood for election in Scotland. The 2010 General Election was unique in that for the first time female Muslim candidates outnumbered males.

The special guest invited to the event was the former Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament Lord Steel, who delivered a talk on importance of engaging in politics in whatever capacity.

Mr Bashir Maan also spoke about his own experienes in becoming the first Muslim Councillor in the UK in 1970, emphasising that Glasgow has the proud distiction of producing the first Muslim Councillor and first Muslim MP (Muhammad Sarwar).

The Seminar included a candid panel discussion with the 2010 Election candidates on their experiences of running for office and their inspirations for doing so.
